When looking up words in the dictionary, you will see their "Part of Speech". Here is a quick guide to understanding the grammatical blocks of the English language.
N.
Nouns (Naming Words)
A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. They are the core subjects or objects in
a sentence. Examples: dog, city, love, computer, ocean.
V.
Verbs (Action Words)
A verb is a word that describes an action, occurrence, or state of being. Every complete sentence
requires at least one verb to tell you what the noun is "doing". Examples: run, jump, think, become,
is.
Adj.
Adjectives (Describing Words)
An adjective is a word that modifies, describes, or gives more information about a noun or pronoun.
They add detail to the subject. Examples: beautiful, tall, blue, intelligent, loud. (e.g., the
loud car).
Adv.
Adverbs (Modifying Words)
An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or even another adverb. While adjectives
describe "what kind", adverbs usually describe "how", "when", "where", or "to what degree". Examples:
quickly, very, loudly, always, here. (e.g., she ran quickly).
